‘Veep’ season 3 has a premiere date; also, ‘Silicon Valley’ looks sweet
Before we close the door on the HBO news avalanche of the day (brought to you courtesy of their TCA event this afternoon), we have two more premiere dates to share with you: “Veep” season 3 and “Silicon Valley,” the new series from Mike Judge (“Office Space”) with one of the greatest casts of funny people you can hope for. Just look at the list that includes Thomas Middleditch, TJ Miller, Congressman Paul Ryan Zach Woods, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, Josh Brener, Christopher Evan Welch and Amanda Crew, and wonder how you can now smile.
Luckily, the date that we are talking about for both shows is the same: Sunday, April 6. “Veep” will immediately follow up “Game of Thrones,” and “Silicon Valley” will in turn follow it. This means that both shows are getting a great opportunity to launch with some good numbers.
With “Veep,” you probably already know a decent amount in terms of what we are going to be dealing with here: The continuing tales of Vice-President Selina Meyer, who may end up trying to be President Selina Meyer over the course of this season. If this happens, it would be quite a hilarious debacle to watch … but what would the show be called? “Prez” just doesn’t have the same sort of ring to it.
As for “Silicon Valley,” you may need some more explanation since we’re looking at something brand-new with a cast of young funny people. According to the network’s logline, the show “looks at the modern-day epicenter of the high-tech gold rush, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.” So basically, it’s about geeks who find a lot of money and power, and then don’t know how to handle it. We’re all for watching that. Plus, we’ve already heard some stories from Nanjiani on the Indoor Kids podcast about the camaraderie that formed among some of the cast, and it sounds like they had a blast working on it.
