2014 TV preview: New Year’s resolutions for ‘Survivor: Cagayan,’ ‘Amazing Race 24,’ other reality shows

Now that we are at the final day of 2013, it is time for the final entry in our New Year’s resolutions series … this time for some of your favorite reality TV shows. There are quite a few on this list that really do have some things that they need to resolve; meanwhile, some of the others just need to keep doing what they’re doing, and that is entertaining us without fail week after week.

“The Amazing Race 24” – To go to some new locations, and have some of the challenges at these new places be something more than just modified versions of menial tasks that could be done at home.

“American Idol” – To force the judges to begin every episode with a rousing rendition of “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” and then allow contestants to actually choose songs that are from the past 20 years rather than just Whitney Houston or Stevie Wonder covers.

“Big Brother” – To cast all-stars this season, and make an effort to ensure that the ones that you cast are not completely racist and/or awful most of the time. Dan Gheesling vs Dr. Will Kirby would be our dream.

“The Celebrity Apprentice” – To return with a new season of really ridiculous people, and to help us remember that Donald Trump is at his best in an environment where he cannot be taken seriously.

“King of the Nerds” – To come up with a different way for contestants to actually compete for the title rather than making it into “Survivor.”

“Real Housewives of New Jersey” – To go a full season without someone proclaiming out loud “you ruined the family.” Also, to not have Teresa Giudice constantly be the focus of everyone’s attention.

“Survivor: Cagayan” – To actually give us a clear edit of the 18 new people, and not just focus on only three or four of them for most of the season like they have in some of the other seasons with all new people.

“Teen Mom 2” – To go far, far away, back to the depths of the underworld for which it was born. In other words… cancellation please.

“The Voice” – This may be controversial, but introduce at least one new coach. There is a lot of fun that comes from someone turning the chair around for the first time and building a team.

“Whodunnit?” – To somehow pull off a miracle and get yourself renewed for another season, though personally it looks very unlikely as though this will happen.
