MTV’s ‘Teen Wolf’ season 3 premiere smashes viewership records
MTV has a reason to howl with delight today. They did not need a big-name awards show in order to boost ratings for the new season of “Teen Wolf.” While the Movie Awards has helped to be a lead-in to some of the past premieres, Monday’s season 3 launch had no such luxury, and yet, it drew some of the biggest ratings yet.
Overall, the episode drew a total of around 2.4 million viewers, and also a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. These are the show’s best numbers ever in both measures, and they prove that there is still a craving both for supernatural content in a post-“Vampire Diaries” world, but also a hunger for scripted fare on a network best known for fist-pumps and teen moms. MTV has to be even more thrilled with this news given that 2013 had been a pretty awful year for them now that “Jersey Shore” is gone, “Buckwild” was canceled following Shain Gandee’s tragic death, and there has yet to be a new show to really draw any buzz at all.
Can “Teen Wolf” keep this momentum up? We’re inclined to say yes, mostly because there isn’t really anything else coming up on the network that will capture a similar sort of demo viewership. The one thing we find especially ironic about this is that Colton Haynes left this series and joined “Arrow” on The CW; however, “Teen Wolf” drew almost exactly the same sort of demo figures as the superhero show did almost all spring. (At least Haynes is now a series regular over on “Arrow.”)
