‘The Vampire Diaries’ spin-off ‘The Originals’ picked up; Joseph Morgan fans cheer!
Even with the ratings for the backdoor pilot for “The Originals” being a little lower than the average “Vampire Diaries” episode (with a preliminary 18-49 rating of 0.9), this and the show’s quality were still enough to convince The CW to give the series at least thirteen episodes of the show for the fall. (Update: the series was adjusted up to a 1.0 in the final numbers, even to last week.)
As a part of an announcement earlier that also included the renewals of “Hart of Dixie” and “Beauty and the Beast,” the news about “The Originals” was also announced. While we know that there were many who absolutely loved what the network put on the air, it was also a little bit more polarizing in some ways by the fans than many may have predicted. The twist about Hayley’s pregnancy was not loved by everyone who watched the show, with some feeling as though it was almost too much of a game-changer and not the way that they wanted to see Klaus’ story move forward.
Nonetheless, Joseph Morgan now has himself a full-time job for the fall, along with Daniel Gillies, Claire Holt, and all of the show’s new actors. Filming for “The Originals” will shift more to Atlanta than New Orleans, with one of the primary reasons for this being that it allows for some more opportunities to have characters cross over from one show to the next. We also expect it to follow “The Vampire Diaries” directly up on the Thursday schedule, just so The CW can have a strong lineup much like they have with “Arrow” and “Supernatural” on Wednesdays. However, nothing here has been confirmed.
What’s your reaction to “The Originals” being picked up to series so soon, do you think that it has staying power? If you want to read what our overall take on the backdoor pilot was, be sure to check out our full review here.
