‘Girls’ season 3 will not feature Charlie; Christopher Abbott leaves series

GirlsAfter going through the wringer, dating the world’s creepiest artist, and embarrassing herself royally with a cover of Kanye West’s “Stronger,” it looks like Marnie’s happy ending on “Girls” is going to be back at square one for season 3. Why? The actor responsible for the role of Charlie in Christopher Abbott has reportedly left the show after behind-the-scenes clashes with show creator, star, writer, and director Lena Dunham.

This news was first reported by the New York Post, and while a rep for the actor did not confirm any of the friction that took place behind the scenes, he did verify that Abbott is no longer a part of the cast:

“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”

Abbott does have a budding film career potentially ahead for him, at least so long as these reports don’t end up causing any trouble for him moving forward. He’s hardly the first actor to leave a successful show, but at least most of the time the series is able to write some sort of fitting conclusion first to justify why the character isn’t present. It was starting to seem as though Marnie and Charlie were ready to settle down, and now she’s going to be on her own again. Considering how tied this character was to the world of the show, we’re now wondering how Dunham will write him off the show: will Charlie die, or will they ship him off to wherever Jessa is right now?

What is interesting is that Dunham posted the following message on Twitter last night, though not addressed to any one thing:

“A new insult, to use never and aimed at no one: ‘Her? She’s so difficult she could have creative differences with a kidney bean!'”

What do you think about this news, and do you think that Abbott will regret this decision? If you want to read some more news when it comes to the “Girls” finale ratings, you can do so over at the link here.
