‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Laura Carmichael talks future for Edith
“Downton Abbey” is now in the early stages of production for season 4, and based on everything that she has read of the upcoming scripts so far, one actress is beyond excited for what is coming up for her character. (Warning: the following contains spoilers for Americans who want to remain surprised about what is coming up during the season 3 finale airing on PBS Sunday night.)
The last we saw Laura Carmichael’s character of Lady Edith on the series, we were witnessing her going through a rather difficult time. She was happy to have a new man interested in her, but her family had some serious skepticism thanks to the fact that it was a married man, and the two were progressing forward without much consideration to this idea at all.
Now, based on what the actress is saying in a new interview on the subject of the upcoming episodes, it appears as though Edith is really not putting too much at all into what other people may be saying or thinking about her:
“She’s coming into her own a little bit … I think after being jilted she’s thrown it all out the window, any ideas she did have in the first place and I think that’s been good for her. It’s given her a bit of independence and hotspur. I love playing her.”
This is the closest thing to a concrete plot spoiler that we have received for the season thus far, as most of the cast is being kept under a very tight leash to not give very much away. The only other scoop we can share for sure is that there will be a new love interest for Mary in the upcoming episodes, and the actor playing him could actually be locked in for a season beyond this coming one.

The actor who plays Matthew opted not to return after the third season, and the producers decided that recasting would be a mistake (which is most likely true). The only option that made sense in the long run was to kill him off.

This show is just Great. Why kill Mattew off? But I guess you have plenty of other characters for stories. Well all I know is that the 4th Season cannot come soon enough for me. Keep up the excellent work.

I hear “Matthew” didn’t want to participate in the show anymore. He said he only signed the contract for 3 seasons and that’s it. I guess he was ready for some bigger and better things – sigh…
