‘Supernatural’ season 8, episode 10 preview: Misha Collins’ next mission
Have you been missing “Supernatural” season 8 over the holiday season? If so, The CW has gift-wrapped something rather nice, and we have it for you now almost as a late Christmas present: the official synopsis for the show’s return to the air on January 16 entitled “Torn and Frayed.”
This episode, at least based on what we know so far, is going to have a little bit of something for everyone. We’re sure that Misha Collins fans will rejoice getting to see Castiel working once again with Naomi, and that Crowley is involved in some shady business. At the same time, that polarizing Amelia plot (especially when it comes to how it has caused so much tension for Sam and Dean) is only going to get more dramatic moving forward:
“Naomi (guest star Amanda Tapping) tells Castiel (Misha Collins) that Crowley (guest star Mark Sheppard) is holding an angel captive and Castiel must rescue him before Crowley finds out their secrets. Castiel turns to Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help. Meanwhile, Sam (Jared Padalecki) meets with Amelia (guest star Liane Balaban) who asks him to make a choice: stay with her or leave and never contact her again.”
While there are a contingent of fans out there who want to see Sam happy, it doesn’t really feel at the moment like Amelia is the right lady for him. After all, can’t he have the best of both worlds and find a woman that does not allow him to change the life (and the job) that he currently has? After all, we already know what happened the last time he was with her.
What’s your take on Sam here: do you think he will choose to stay with her and thus abandon many of his previous plans, or once again join Dean in going about the family business? If you want to see a new holiday “gift” via Jensen Ackles, be sure to check it out over here.

Much as I hate to admit it, if Shannon is right about “Goodbye, Stranger” being the next episode with Cas in it, I have a feeling that the episode title WILL apply to him. After all of the recurring character deaths in the last few seasons, there really is noone else that it could be.
However, I think it is much more likely that Naomi will have tampered with Cas’ memory instead of the other way around; she has no hold over the brothers and would have no means of being able to get them into a position to wipe their memories in the first place. We’ve already seen that she can force Cas to do things against his morals, such as killing Samandriel, so manipulating Cas’ perception of his relationship with the brothers? Yeah, it’s incredibly feasible, unfortunately.
On the other hand, mental alterations have already been done to Castiel in spades after season 7 and I can’t see the writer’s going too far into it for a second time. Additionally, I also doubt they will kill Cas off at this point. Without Cas, we have no point of reference for sympathy about the going’s on in Heaven. It affects the other characters relatively little in the long run and the only other angel we know of now is Naomi… and I don’t think anyone really cares much how she feels about the potential abuse of a tablet describing the secrets of her race, to be honest.
The fact that Cas is a popular character is another point in his favour for not being killed-off just yet and unless they cram a lot of the Heaven/tablets storyline into the last few episodes, we haven’t really seen Cas involved with anything to do with the main plotlines other than to HULK-SMASH a tablet in half and freak the brothers out a bit. True, WE know that something major is going on with Naomi and the angels, but none of the other characters do; that part is from CAS’ point of view so we know only as much as he does, and the brothers themselves know nothing of it. So, the plot hasn’t moved on for them.
Long story short? If it is a goodbye to one of the few recurring characters that are left at this point, I doubt it will be a permanent one.

Ok so, Season 8 Episode 17 is entitled “Goodbye, Stranger” which also happens to be the episode where Cas comes back into play. Oh no. SOMEONE TELL ME SOMETHING BAD DOESN’T HAPPEN.
This is highly doubtful but what if Naomi wipes Sam and Dean’s memory of ever meeting Castiel, and they forget all about him. SO he becomes a complete stranger oh god i’m giving myself feels.

I agree that I don’t see Sam and Amelia together (no chemistry either) but there could be something not yet revealed about that situation. When Sam left Amelia, someone is watching in the shadows, who? And why? I agree that Dean’s relationship with Benny adds dimension, Dean defends Benny like Sam defended Ruby in season 4. In both situations, this “monster” saved their life and they put trust in them. Although we know now that Ruby’s motive only served her agenda. Not sure if Benny has an agenda.

Thorin: “Who cares about Cas, Cass, or whatever the name is.”
Uh, clearly MANY people do, because he’s an incredibly popular character.
Of course, you knew that and you’re just being an annoying troll.

To Obi, so you think DEAN is the useless brother huh? Really? I love Sam but come on. SAM is the one this season who’s being ‘useless’! He just basically said ‘f–k it’ and never even bothered to see if Dean was alive or what might have happened to him! All Sam cares about is this bitchy chick, who has a husband by the way. He cares not only not about Dean but left Kevin out there high and dry. And yes, Martin’s death IS on Sam! If he hadn’t been so hell bent to try to hurt Dean by going after Benny, Martin, who was shown to still not be all there in the head, wouldn’t have been placed in the situation with Benny.
Useless Dean, who looked after and sacrificed most of his life for his beloved little brother. Yeah, he sure is useless.

Oh man I feel so late to this but I had to post. I had no idea there were so many wide interpretations of Supernatural. Usually shows are so one dimensional that the writer directs you where to think. It’s nice to see a show that causes people to have multiple opinions about the same thing from different angles. Even if some do seem misguided.

I love Cas, Cass, Castiel!!! As for “rejoicing” about Cas working with Naomi….well, I do like Amanda Tapping and I’m really interested in the angels, but Naomi’s nefarious doings aren’t filling me with glee.
@Rana While I agree with your message about free will, I think your point would have been better expressed without the name-calling and I didn’t find anything offensive about Gabriel’s post.
@Gabriel If Amelia isn’t told or doesn’t accept the “hunting”, I’d agree they have no future, but I don’t think we can say anything definitive for the Sam/Amelia relationship until we see more interaction between them.
As for those griping about Dean, you have finally pushed me into choosing sides. Before I never wanted to get into the endless Sam vs Dean arguments. I even preferred many Sam traits to Dean traits. BUT….now I am seeing what the Dean fans have been saying. Was the text an underhanded trick? Yes, it was, and I was actually shocked and sick to my stomach when the truth was revealed.
However, I also think Sam left Dean with no choice after the coldcocking and handcuffing he, at the very least, allowed Martin to do.
Is Dean a jerk? Yes. This aspect of his character bugs me.
Still, to never acknowledge Sam’s culpability for his own actions just boggles my mind. Why did Sam abandon Martin when he received the text? Why is Sam so focused on Benny when he was perfectly happy to let werewolf girl go? Notice that it’s not like Dean insisted on hunting her down while allowing Benny freedom.
I’m not sure we know all there is to know about Benny or his motivations, but from what we have seen–which is all I can go on–Benny is drinking blood from bags and killing other vampires. These are not exactly crimes for which the Winchesters need to dole out their final justice.
Finally, back to the episode in the article, I think the promo I saw didn’t gel with this description, but it’s been awhile since I saw it. Weren’t Sam and Dean both with Cas? Doesn’t seem like the entire episode is split into two storylines as someone here was suggesting.

@Rana – Wow, do you go outside much? That rant, cursing, and throwing insults was highly inappropriate. I think someone needs to go outside and get some fresh air.
@”Dean haters” – I don’t think they have “destroyed” Dean. What they have done is put Dean in a situation similar to Sam’s relationship with Amy. At the time, Dean thought that he was doing the right thing by killing Amy. Now, he has someone that he feels deserves their chance… and it goes against everything he ever believed. I think it adds to Dean, making him more complex than the “black or white” Dean that we’re used to.

Man, I wish everyone would get off Dean’s back about the whole phone call thing. Was it below the belt? Sure. But Sam had sent a crazy hunter after one of Dean’s only friends and then joined crazy hunter after crazy hunter knocked Dean out! Anyone remember that? Dean could’ve let Sam have it, but he chose to just remove Sam from the coming fight. Amelia needs to go. Boring plot and no chemistry between her and Sam. The rescue effort by Cas and Dean is something I’m looking forwards to. This has been a great season despite some issues and I can’t wait for it to be back.

I only half agree with Obi.
I think that yes, they did destroy Dean. But the reason I’m sticking around is only to hope that they make the characters once again blood brothers. They aren’t die-hard anymore — what happened to Emo Sam hunting down demon after demon when Dean was in Hell, or when Dean simply couldn’t sleep at night when he knew Sam was in the Cage?
I don’t think this is the characters being dumb. I think it is the writers’ mistakes, it’s their fault and isn’t true whatsoever to the characters, but sadly since these seasons exist we can’t ignore the fact that seasons 6-present are apart of 1-5.

Sam should leave her in the past. Their work is important and the only thing she should expect, is loyalty, but not to leave his job, loyalty as a lover. If she truly loved him, then she’d be there for him always. When he could get back to her, that door would always be open and make the most of the times they can be together. That is not an easy position to be in, but it is possible to do it and do it right. It’s like being married to someone in the military. She needs to get to steppin’!

I assume that you were using a touch a sarcasm when you said Cas fans would “rejoice” over Cas and Naomi?! He’s not “working” with her, she is clearly using him as a mind-slave. She is evil, at best, corrupt, at the least. I’m not sure she’s even TAKING Cas (his essence) to heaven, but that she may instead actually be taking him somewhere on earth (reminiscent of Zachariah’s trick). She’s clearly a threat (maybe a leader of a group of fallen angels wanting to take over); Dean needs to gank her. As for Amelia, she’s a total bore fest. I hope they end that story pronto.

I don’t think Sam should be with Amelia, but I also don’t think he should help Dean out with a damned thing. The fact that Dean played him with that fake phone call for help from Amelia shows that Dean no longer cares one iota about Sam. He would have known how horrified and terrified Sam would be at the thought that another woman he cared about might be in danger, but he did what he wanted to achieve his own goals, and I’m completely disgusted by the way the writers have destroyed the character of Dean Winchester.
I’m more interested in seeing what happens with the angels after having to watch the downfall of the Winchester Brothers – and I HATE the angels, including Castiel. He’s more interesting this season, however, than Dean, and since I can’t bear to see Sam hurt anymore by his useless brother, I’ll stick around to see what happens with the angels.

Considering the show as we know it is over if Sam stays with Amelia, the outcome for that is pretty well a given. They may be ending what has become a not popular story as quickly as possible. It will take away any Sam POV, but we weren’t getting much even with the story so it’s probably the best choice to cut their losses and move on. I hope they are saving poor little Samandriel.
On a whole, I’m not particularly looking forward to the Dean and Cas adventure hour mixed with As the Sam Turns. But it is what it is.
I will say that I don’t see how Sam never seeing Amelia again relieves the tension she brought to the relationship. Sam hasn’t seen her since Dean came back and Dean’s resentments are about Sam not looking for him and finding Amelia. So I don’t see how this will change much on that front.

I have to agree with Trickster … enjoy is not quite the word I would use to describe having Cas tortured and manipulated. I enjoy having Cas back more often than last season but could deal without Naomi hurting him, thanks. Pretty much having Sam, Dean or Cas hurt is something I hate although I realize it would be pretty boring if nothing bad ever happened to them.

There is no future for Sam and Amelia. First of all he has not told her who he is so how can she choose between her husband, Don and Sam when she doesn’t even know the real Sam. Second, like it or not, certain human families have been chosen to bear the burden of dealing with the supernatural world so the Winchesters and Cas (and his poor vessel Jimmy Novak) must rescue Samandriel (and his tortured human vessel) and work to close the gates of hell. For all we know this could be heaven’s plain and Naomi could be following god’s commands.

Yay! I can’t wait to see what happens between Sam and Amelia. I am so worried about Cas, I hope he saves his brother (we are talking about Samandriel right?). I am so excited for the development of Dean’s and Castiel’s relationship, and I am hoping for more.
