‘Gossip Girl’ series finale spoilers: Why producers opted for the big reveal

Gossip GirlIt may be hard to think, but the series finale of “Gossip Girl” at one point may not have actually featured the reveal about who the show’s title character really is. For at least a brief while, she was the mystery figure that was important to the show, but her identity almost did not matter to a certain extent some much as some of the things that she was opting to do.

However, it is now official that you will in fact be getting an opportunity to uncover the mystery person behind the voice during the finale, and this is just one of many mysteries (including whether that Chuck / Blair wedding is really going to happen) that fans are waiting to be resolved. Speaking to TV Guide, co-creator Stephanie Savage explains just why it was so important to her at this point that Gossip Girl was finally revealed to the public:

“We always had an idea in our minds of who Gossip Girl was, which we needed to be able to tell our stories, but we were never sure if we were going to reveal that … We weren’t sure that that was something that the audience would want to know. Maybe they would like the idea of not knowing who Gossip Girl was … Last year we did so much storytelling with Gossip Girl in the character that it felt like this year we needed to reveal her true self.”

If we go by process of elimination, then neither Serena nor Georgina can actually be Gossip Girl given that they each filled in for her during a part of season 5; if they did end up being the character, it would make people probably about as angry as the lack of closure for Dan and Blair did at the end of last season. The tricky part in making this reveal, as cool as it could be, is that there are still likely to be a number of people who are unhappy with the way in which it is handled, and will still somehow wish that the character ended up being someone else.
