Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Reign’s transformation into Big Bad

Reign's transformation

One of the big reveals that is coming in Supergirl season 3 is Reign’s transformation into the Big Bad. As it turns out, she will not start out the season that way! On the surface, she is going to look as though she is a reasonably normal character within this world; however, after the fact it will start to become a little bit clearer that there is something more going on with the character than meets the eye.

In speaking on this subject a little bit more to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg does a good job of noting more of what the transformation for this character is going to be like from start to finish this season:

“Her name is Samantha and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.”

What we wonder about at the moment is strictly this: What makes her realize that she is this Worldkiller from another planet, and how is she going to learn how to use some of her powers to the point of being a rival to Supergirl in such a short period of time? It’s something that will very much be worth diving into as this season progresses on, given that on a superficial level it feels like Reign wouldn’t hold a candle to Kara. The problem here may just be that her latent interest in destroying the world, once it takes over, may cause her to forget about every drop of empathy that she once had. She could go from someone who was kind and caring to completely ruthless and dangerous. This, in turn, could fuel her fire to gain power and become who she’s destined to be rather quickly.

The exciting part of this is mostly that you’re seeing a villain origin story, and we haven’t actually had that all that much on some of these CW superhero shows. The closest thing that we would say to this is Deathstroke/Slade Wilson on Arrow, given that he started off reasonably kind on the series before the mirakuru and his hatred for Oliver killing Shado caused him to teeter over the edge. We do hope that we get a chance to see Samantha come into her true form as Reign by the middle of the season, given that at that point, we’d get to still play around with that character for a lengthy period of time.
