The Blacklist season 5 episode 2: The Mentalist alum Owain Yeoman appearing

On the upcoming October 4 episode of The Blacklist season 5, be prepared to see a familiar TV face in Owain Yeoman. The former star of The Mentalist (who played Rigsby on the CBS hit for many years), and Turn: Washington’s Spies’ resident Benedict Arnold, is now taking on a very different role on the NBC show.

We’ll let the synopsis below for this upcoming episode “Greyson Blaise” explain a little more of what you can expect to see from his character:

“Liz (Megan Boone) and the Task Force join Red (James Spader) on an international adventure in pursuit of a billionaire (guest star Owain Yeoman) who moonlights as a high end art thief. Meanwhile, Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) chases a lead and Tom (Ryan Eggold) seeks outside help in identifying the remains in the suitcase.”

Hey, if anything it should prove exciting to see Yeoman take on a role that is very much different from any that he’s played before on TV, and someone who could be a significant adversary for both Red and the FBI, even if it is just for one episode. It feels almost like his character is a combination of Bruce Wayne and Catwoman, which is a great combination to us given that The Blacklist is a show that does have a little bit of a comic book in its DNA. Also, art thieves remind us of White Collar and we miss that show.)

Beyond just seeing Owain Yeoman, there’s also a few other interesting things of note about this episode. For one, Dembe is getting a solo mission without Reddington! That’s not something that you see all that often, and it’s therefore something we embrace with open arms. Meanwhile, this also proves that the story with Tom and the suitcase is not going to be tied up in just one episode. We wonder if this is a secret he’s going to keep close to the vest for a while. If he knows that Reddington is Liz’s father and she’s trying to build a stronger relationship with him, how much is she going to want to do to try and upset that? He could learn more about the remains and hold onto the secret for a rainy day if things go sideways … though this is just one possibility. We love theories when it comes to this show, so we’re going to continue to present some exciting ones throughout the coming months on both Reddington, Liz, and probably a number of other things that surface.

One of the biggest things here at CarterMatt is that we just spoke with showrunner Jon Bokenkamp yesterday! It’s a great interview that touches on everything from Reddington and Liz to new villains and the show’s long-term plans. Look for that to come out a couple of days before the show’s premiere on September 27.
