Grey’s Anatomy season 14 spoilers: More insight on show’s tonal shift

Grey's Anatomy season 14

While we know that there are many super-dramatic moments ahead on Grey’s Anatomy season 14, there is also an opportunity for comedy. In general, one of the teases that we’ve heard a few times now is that the show is looking for more of a lighter tone in the midst of all of the drama, death, and despair that we’ve seen as of late.

One of the biggest changes that the show is seeing actually comes from behind the scenes, as former executive producer Krista Vernoff is coming back on board after being a part of the show the first eight seasons. She’s someone who knew a lot about the balance between lightness and darkness in the early years of the show, and this is something that she is looking to bring back.

In shedding a little more light on that subject now to The Hollywood Reporter, Giacomo Gianniotti (Andrew DeLuca) had the following to say:

“Krista coming back is exciting. From the moment she stepped on set, she approached us all individually and talked with us and asked us all our deepest desires and dreams and about our personal life and has made a real effort to infuse that to Grey’s Anatomy … We have some new writers and fresh voices that are going to give this season an amazing new vibe and energy. It’s going to be lighter and funnier. Krista wants comedy and wants people to laugh. That’s the way she started it and she wants to continue that.”

Given that Vernoff was not a part of the show at the time in which Gianniotti first came on, there should be some joy for him especially to see how she ends up writing a character like Andrew, a guy who has gone through a lot thanks to Alex and Jo and could continue to do so. In one of the less-pleasant stories that could be coming this season, signs do point to Matthew Morrison coming back for a stint this year as Paul, Jo’s estranged husband and a guy known for causing all sorts of significant trouble.

Some of the other more emotional storylines this season could include Meredith figuring out her future and the arrival of Megan Hunt. Not only does her return mean a lot to her brother Owen, but also potentially Nathan Riggs thanks to the romance that the two of them once had.
