How Gotham season 4 will incorporate Solomon Grundy

Solomon Grundy

Going into Gotham season 4, it goes without saying that there is excitement around seeing Solomon Grundy in action. It’s a famed Batman villain, but also a character we’ve seen in some form already on the show. Drew Powell’s Butch Gilzean laid the groundwork for this role, who is going to transform following him being shot in the head at the end of season 3.

As for how you are going to meet the character, executive producer John Stephens notes to Entertainment Weekly that it will come about in rather crazy fashion:

“He’s been in a vegetative state at Gotham General and so in order to clear up space for more beds, the administrators at the hospital have him dumped in Slaughter Swamp, as one does in Gotham … So he emerges reborn out of Slaughter Swamp as the character we know as Solomon Grundy.”

You won’t see Grundy for the first time until after the premiere, but even when you do he’s not going to have some of the memories that he once did. After all, he is going to actually strike up a friendship with none other than Edward Nygma! Stephens tells the website that “we begin the story of a very unlikely friendship between these two who are sworn enemies but now, all of a sudden in season 4, are best friends as they move through Gotham.”

What we’re personally curious to see is just how Gotham the show decides that they want to play around with Grundy in terms of his powers. In the comics this character possesses in some iterations superhuman strength, and is almost impossible to kill under any circumstances. While we’ve definitely seen some impossible things within this show including resuscitations, we don’t necessarily think that many of the villains themselves have had powers that extend far beyond what some normal humans could do with the right materials. That’s in part what long made the Batman universe so interesting, given that most of the heroes and villains within it inherently didn’t have many special powers. That’s what makes villains like Clayface, Killer Croc, and Grundy stand out so much more than others.

It’s also worth remembering that Grundy is not the only new/old villain appearing on the show in season 4, given that the future of one Barbara Kean is not entirely clear after the electrocution at the end of season 3. This is not a show that tends to kill many of its characters, so the curiosity here stems in which or not this move makes her even more dangerous and unhinged as a character. The season 3 version of her was almost calculated in her plans to take over the city, even if she did still have a crazy streak.
