Is a Longmire season 6 premiere date clue hidden in DVD release?
Earlier this week, we were sent an announcement that the Longmire season 5 DVD and Blu-Ray will be released on September 26, which is exciting for fans who want to own a hard copy of the episodes. (There is also a Digital HD version that is streaming across all platforms on that day as well.) In a statement, Rosemary Markson, WBHE Senior Vice President, Television Marketing, had the following to say:
“We are thrilled to bring Longmire: The Complete Fifth Season to DVD, Blu-ray and Digital for the show’s passionate fans to continue to add to their collections … With this release fans will have a chance to re-experience every harrowing moment of family drama, unrequited desire and continue to question where true loyalties lie.”
There will be some special features that go along with the collection, but what they are remain unclear at this time.
So … why is this important to the premiere date?
The big reason is that DVD / Blu-Ray releases tend to come before a new season is released as a means to encourage viewers to catch up. For example, the season 4 DVD was released on September 13, 2016, ten days before season 5 started streaming on Netflix. Meanwhile, the season 3 DVD was released on March 3, 2015, but that’s a little bit of a different situation given that the show was transitioning from A&E to Netflix at that time.
The point here is that it’s unlikely that Longmire season 6 will premiere before September 26, which means you can expect a slightly later start to the final season. It’s possible you could see it on a day after that release, but if the pattern last year holds it could be early October before episodes start streaming. It’s going to be worth the wait, so from our vantage point, it’s okay that if there is a bit of a delay. (Remember, this is all just speculation for the time being, and we have zero problem being surprised if the premiere is earlier. It would just be bizarre to release a DVD for an old season after the new one is out.)
