The Originals season 4 spoilers: The struggle of Hayley, Elijah

Hayley

When it comes to Elijah and Hayley on The Originals season 4, it is often a case of good news and bad. They find each other, they fall apart, and then they find each other once again before falling apart one more time. There aren’t too many moments where there is joy, and then that joy stays around long enough for the two to be comfortable for the future.

It probably doesn’t also help anything that Elijah as a character is one who does keep routinely end up “dying” in some capacity. He’s not necessarily gone this time around, as Hayley is going to be venturing within the spirit world to bring him back after he was trapped there. She’s got a lot of responsibility on her hands, but that may not be the reason why an eventual relationship between the two, despite the fan support that is out there for it, may not work out.

Instead, here is what Daniel Gillies uttered on this subject in a new interview with TVLine:

“It’s sort of who they are, that’s their greatest obstacle. Have you ever been in a relationship where you’re kind of doomed from the get-go? You can sense it in your bones. There’s that feeling that you’re drawn to one another, but at the same time, you’re resisting it with good instinct. And those first instincts are the ones that need to govern. At the end of the day, [Hayley will] always be the mother to Klaus’ child, and he’ll always be murderous monster in a suit. I don’t think they’ll ever extricate themselves from what they are. And what they are at their deepest selves can’t share a sustainable relationship.”

Of course there is a hope that things somehow could change between the two, but if they don’t, maybe the idea of Hayley and Elijah is just yet another tragic element to what is effectively a very tragic show where nobody ever seems to have happiness for long. It’s one of the darkest shows on The CW for that reason, but there is still that sense of hope (not Hope the child, mind you) that still keeps you invested and wanting to keep watching.
