Absentia spoilers: The struggle of Alice Durand
For those who haven’t seen some of the other stories that are out there, Alice is a character in a rather trying spot. Following the disappearance of one Emily Byrne (Stana Katic) many years before, she fell in love with Nick (Patrick Heusinger), marrying him and helping to raise his and Emily’s child. In this sense, she did nothing wrong and tried to just have the life she always wanted.
Yet, as the image below indicates further, everything is about to be upended. Emily is alive, and the consequences of this news may be both vast and far-reaching. It could tear apart Alice’s marriage and her family, all because of something that is so immeasurably out of her control. Will that for sure happen? Not necessarily, but this is one of the big questions at the center of this coming episode — consider it one among many. Emily won’t have much memory of the past several years of her life, so it’s possible that her time with Nick may feel far more recent than it actually is. This, in turn, could cause a further strain.
If you are one of those people who love to doll out conspiracy theories (perfectly understandable for a show like this, which does seem to welcome many of them with open arms), one of the big ideas that could be rolling around is whether or not Alice is somehow involved in a larger conspiracy. Maybe she wanted to get close to Nick because she’s a secret operative looking to get some intelligence from him? It’s possible that she started the romance with ulterior motives, only to grow to love him romantically after the fact. There are still an unlimited number of possibilities when it comes to the character and the relationships she has; this is why there are so many eager people out there waiting for a premiere date both overseas and here in North America.
