Saturday Night Live music: LCD Soundsystem performs ‘Call the Police,’ ‘American Dream’
So how did they do on the show tonight? We will say that the dancing of the guy in the background may be the thing we’ll remember the most, given that it felt like you were watching a Brat Pack movie where at the end everyone parties down and forgets everything else that happened.
The song first performed on the night was “Call the Police,” a pretty energetic number that certainly showed off some of the band’s quirkiness. It was symphonic and interestingly-styled, but if there is a problem with it, we’d say that the stage felt incredibly small for some reason. For the record, we know that the SNL stage is small, but for whatever reason it felt tiny in this performance thanks to the way that everyone was laid out on there.
As someone who’s heard much of the group’s music but never really watched or seen them live, this was a fun experience for us. As for whether or not the average viewer of this show enjoyed this, we’re a little more unsure on that.
Here’s a little historical perspective on the group — they are promoting their first album in several years, so this should be thought of as a big comeback to the national stage. They got together in the early 2000’s, but it was a good five or six years ago when they stopped releasing music.
Second song – This is entitled “American Dream,” and there is a political undertone to that just by looking at the title itself. This was anthemic and powerful, but it also was a challenging SNL performance because there wasn’t much of a real hook insofar as the melody went. If we weren’t familiar with the band, it’s hard to say that we would watch the performance again just because it probably takes a few listens for the sound and the lyrics to get ingrained into your brain.
