Doctor Who season 10: Peter Capaldi opens up further on departure

Peter Capaldi's departure

Peter Capaldi’s departure from Doctor Who after season 10 is something that is going to take some time to get used to, even if we realize that in some ways, we should be predisposed to it happening at this point. It’s a big part of the fabric of the show! Regenerations happen, but you become attached to the people you’ve been watching and it’s therefore hard to imagine them leaving.

However, Capaldi realizes that this is a show with a limited shelf life; as a matter of fact, he has concerns over staying so long that he overstays his welcome and that the series loses some of its momentum as a result of that. This is a subject he discusses further in a recent interview with Empire magazine:

“That’s one of the reasons I’m leaving. Because with this volume of work, it’s hard to constantly be searching for new ways of doing things … But Doctor Who is weird because I love it so much. Part of me enjoys doing the same thing, while part of me wants different challenges.”

It does certainly seem like there is a part of Peter who’d love to remain on the show far longer than season 10, which is probably why he waited so long to make his decision on the future of himself in the roll. In the end, though, he clearly realized that it would be better for himself, and better for the series as a whole, if he were to move on and they could begin the casting process anew. This is what is going on right now — for the record, we still wholeheartedly believe that anyone who claims to have any sort of advance knowledge as to what’s going on at this point in the process is full of it.

We’re not sure how deep any casting conversations are; once Chris Chibnall’s other show in Broadchurch finishes airing, we figure that the conversations will start to ramp up at around this point. The new Doctor will need to be in place prior to the filming of the Christmas Special a little bit later in the year. There will be certainly a unique arrangement that goes on with that, given the sole fact that Chibnall will write the new Doctor scenes (however many of them there are — there may just be one) while Steven Moffat, who is also getting set to depart, will handle the rest.
