This Is Us episode 17 reaction: Was Kate responsible for Jack’s death?

Was Kate responsible -

What happened on This Is Us episode 17? There were a number of different things, but specifically, we want to talk about one moment in the closing minutes.

Was Kate responsible for Jack’s death? This was a confession that she made to Toby in the closing minutes of the episode, one where she took responsible for what happened. We saw a message from Jack to Kate (is it linked at all?), and we saw Jack’s quest to see Rebecca. Unfortunately, what we did not see was the moment itself. The usage of Sufjan Stevens music in this moment, for the record, is outstanding. Carrie & Lowell is an outstanding album and everyone should check it out. “Death Without Dignity” is the name of the song that you heard there.

In getting back to Kate, we do have a difficult time seeing that she was directly responsible for anything that happened. She obviously didn’t want to kill him, and she just because she did something to potentially put him in the line of fire isn’t something that she should blame herself for. Unfortunately, this is life … and that’s something that this show does try to reinforce in every way that they can.

There are more questions that come out of Kate’s confession than answers, but knowing this does inform the Kate character even more than almost anything else all season. It could explain her struggles with guilt, her emotional separation that she creates sometimes, and the struggles that she’s faced with people in her life. The fact that she waited this long to tell Toby about it shows further how much this impacted her past, and still does to this day.

It’s hard to know if this is something that is going to be getting any better for Kate. After all, we have heard already that it may be a little while before we actually learn the truth about what happened to Jack. It’s not something that the show seems altogether in a hurry to get to.
