Outlander season 3 in South Africa: Sam Heughan arrives!

Outlander season 3 in South Africa -

This Outlander season 3 in South Africa story is ultimately rather simple: It’s about arrivals!

Specifically, we wrote yesterday about how Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were departing Seattle following their time at Emerald City Comic-Con, and were eventually going to be routed to their final destination in Cape Town. We don’t keep track of travel schedules and whatnot, but we are very much pleased to learn that we are now getting closer to filming being back underway! Sam confirmed in response to an airport photo on Twitter that he is officially now in the country; we also have a separate imagine below from executive producer Maril Davis claiming that she is also there. (How beautiful is that aerial shot from Cape Town?) While we don’t have any obvious photographic proof from Balfe that she is there, it’s fair to assume she’ll be ready to go for filming soon.

It’s incredible to know that much of the group is assembling now in the country like the Outlander Avengers, but there is something else exciting about the team heading there. (We’re not talking about them getting to make an amazing show — that speaks for itself.) South Africa is the sort of place that you hear about in the news maybe a few times a year, but rarely do you ever get a sense for its geography, its people, or its style. It’s such a fascinating place, countryrooted deeply in history and with its own unique traditions. It really is a world apartment from Scotland, where the majority of season 3 to date was filmed. (There’s a really great episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown about South Africa that we recommend checking out if you have not seen it already, even if not all of it is set in this particular city.)

Given that Starz understandably doesn’t put out their master schedule for public consumption, it’s unclear when Heughan and Balfe will first appear on set. The one that we do hope is that the two parties do both have an opportunity to rest and relax a little bit before they get underway. We know that they’ll be so busy that there may not be a lot of time to enjoy the city, but they’ve got a few months! Hopefully there’ll be a break here or there along the way.

If you missed it…

Earlier today, Outlander officially found its way into our 2nd annual TV Madness tournament, where it is the reigning champ! You can read up on further information, or even vote for it, just by heading over to the link here.
