Mark Harmon not leaving NCIS season 14; health allegations both disturbing and wrong
Here’s how the internet telephone game first started when it comes to this show. Someone from a media outlet from a good year ago posts a picture of Harmon, which leads to people commenting on his appearance. Then, one questionable site picks it up speculating on it, then another picks it up with questions about the actor leaving the show over health concerns. Finally, we then get to a site called Counsel & Heal suggesting that the “allegedly sick” actor is “quitting” the show with zero evidence of it.
The zero evidence part of this is disturbing in its own right; it’s even more so when you have a site supposedly about physical and mental wellness (operative word being “supposedly”) speculating on someone’s health based on their appearance. Saying someone looks “sick” based on their appearance is just another form of body-shaming when you don’t actually know what is going on.
Let’s take a deep breath now, since this sort of stuff really unnerves us because it’s basically capitalizing on false rumors for traffic. Harmon’s not going anywhere, and there is little evidence suggesting that he is.
Time for the facts
NCIS is already renewed for a season 15; meanwhile, Harmon has a contract that runs for that duration. The actor may eventually decide to move on or go in a lesser direction; there’s already a possible thread on the story about him getting a promotion that could take him out of the field to a certain degree. The problem is that we’re not at this point just yet, and while the show’s ratings are down, they are not anywhere near cancellation.
We know that Gibbs isn’t everyone’s favorite character among the viewers who watch the show. With that said, we do hope that everyone can agree that peddling departure rumors, and illness rumors like this is pretty terrible.

Of course, be sure to let us know what you actually want to see happen with Gibbs moving forward. Are you happy that Mark Harmon is not leaving NCIS? (Photo: CBS.)

I agree with charlotte Mark Harmon is the NCIS. I can’t believe our dear little Abby is leaving now that’s a position that will never be ever replaceable with by anyone. If Abby has to move away can she not still be part in someway from where she moves to, rumor that she was moving to London. who knows about rumors I watch it everyday my grandkids are hooked. It was bad enough when Ziva left than Tony. Could some brain guy come up with Ziva didn’t die and Tony and diff. Abbey work from a different ncis? I know for a fact if Abby and Gibbs leaves the show is dead. I love the show and people that used to be the team I am not quite their with this new group being added to the team yet. Please writers, and actors think of something to fixed this. The most popular show ever.

I don’t think he looks ill..I was just shocked they suddenly let his hair get too white. That’s a hair colorist’s opinion. I was glad to see they subdued it as the season went along.

It’s fair to wonder that. I just don’t understand some of the people who find it interesting to speculate on if he’s sick or not

I am so grateful that a REPUTABLE news association has addressed the false rumors that have been floating around for at least a year! THANK YOU! I have always shared Charlotte’s opinion (see below) that Mark was made to look a little frailer and paler after he “nearly died” at the end of season 13 and beginning of season 14. It’s all a part of ACTING….and he has always given 110% to his roles. He would have intentionally lost weight during his summer hiatus and then makeup would have made him look pale. It’s nice to know – with proof – that Charlotte actually saw him “in person” during that time and he looked “mighty fine”.
As for Mark’s character, Gibbs, getting a major change by the writers…as Mark would say – that’s up to them. He’s there to play the part – whatever they decide and write for him. Mark is the heart and soul of “NCIS”; he loves the Gibbs role; and he feels a very strong responsibility toward all of the cast and crew working on the show, as well as his world-wide fans. He will NOT be leaving the show anytime soon. Also – I’d like to point out that he won the People’s Choice Favorite TV Crime Drama Actor for 2017. That proves that Mark is very, very popular – still. Both NCIS and Mark Harmon are here to stay for at least one more year.

Thank you! I have to wonder about the motives of the people who have been spreading such rumors for so long.

I believe I heard one of the producers say a few years ago that NCIS will go on as long as Mark Harmon wants it to go on. It is still at the top of the ratings every week, even during reruns. NCIS and Mark Harmon will be around for years. And there is no way Gibbs will sit still to be director. He HATES paperwork! Remember when he was acting director while Jenny was in Europe? Her secretary was practically homicidal trying to get him to read and sign anything.

I did not think he looked sick at all. Also, I did not think he was leaving the series. I think it is terrible when they print rumors about him.

I thought he looked great-not sick at all – in fact I notice he looks more fit. Glad he’s not leaving.

This is why President Donald Trump is saying about the media saying things that are not true.

No…DT is against credible media, CNN, LA Times, NY Times because he doesn’t like the fact they call him out about his incorrect facts. The websites that make up stories about actors/famous people are versions of Star or The Enquirer. No comparison.

Agree 100% with this. There’s a difference between strong, credible media and garbage posts designed for this. We as the public should be able to study and discern the difference.

It’s a shame and a disservice to all of us when non-credible sites are shared and repeated constantly. With each retelling, there are those who begin to believe.

I never believed for a minute that the stories were true — only click bait — and I’m sure they got a lot of hits from concerned fans. I would also add that that photo that they referenced was from a time on the show when the character was recovering from major trauma and therefore excellent acting and makeup. I saw him in person during that era and he looked “mighty fine”, as they say!
I agree with the reader comment that if Mark Harmon goes, NCIS is over! He is the heart of the show and contrary to one of your statements, most polls affirm that he is (and has been for years) the favorite of the majority of fans. Thanks for addressing these stories!

Agree with all of this! And Gibbs IS my favorite character, in fact. I also think that if you could poll all 17 million NCIS viewers, you would find that he is the main reason the majority watch. I saw him in person last summer, and he looked fabulous – very fit and more handsome in person even than on the screen. TPTB have hinted recently that Gibbs might move to director, but that would fly in the face of his attitude toward politics for the past 14 years, so I’m thinking they might just be playing us a bit! Thanks, Matt Carter, for trying to dispel #fakenews that only stirs up mess.

Thank you. I am thoroughly enjoying this season. Maybe I will check in at LON again. I just got tired of all the sniping and one day just decided I would take a break. There are plenty of other sites that just appreciate without constant drama. Life’s too short to bother with that!!

Gibbs is my favorite character and without Mark Harmon playing that part the show would lose something. He is what holds it together.
