‘Saturday Night Live’: On Michael Che’s Donald Trump takedown — and predicting ‘controversy’

SNL -We know that “Saturday Night Live” is a show that loves to generate all sorts of controversy, and we’re sure that Michael Che is going to be getting plenty of attention for his takedown of Donald Trump during “Weekend Update” tonight. He called the President “honey,” and then went on with a series of extremely pointed barbs. He held nothing back, he was bold, and he did so in a way that we haven’t quite seen from him before on the show.

At the end of it, there was also this line — “I hope he quits. I mean, Donald, is this how you want to spend the last two years of your life?”

Let’s have a little bit of fun with the “out of context game,” shall we? We’ve got a feeling that there are going to be pundits and people aplenty who go on and on tomorrow about how this is something way more controversial than it is, and how Che should apologize and the like for suggesting that the President’s going to die soon. Here’s the question that we will ask many of these people: Did you watch the full segment? Do you understand the tone of what was said?

There are going to be a lot of people who see this line and freak out about it — we wish we had the full video of this tonight in order to nip this in the mud. (It’ll be up in the morning.) It was satire, and the entire run was set up to be just that. It was brutal, but at the same time probable one of the smart, most-cutting things that we’ve seen from Che over the years. “SNL” is at its best when it is allowing the show to have as few limitations as possible — though this may be them drawing an even clearer line in the sand than usual when it comes to how they don’t want to tolerate Trump or any of the things that he says any longer.

Ultimately, we’ll see what happens tomorrow when the internet reacts … i.e. the people who never watch the show and just complain about it.
