Golden Globes 2017: Hugh Laurie, Sarah Paulson, ‘Atlanta,’ Tracee Ellis Ross among winners (list)
Tonight, the Golden Globes are airing on NBC, and our focus for this specific article is rather clear: Honoring some of the big winners of the night! This is an article that is going to be updated throughout the night, which should be no surprise to anyone since there is a lot that we are going to have to say in terms of wins and surprises. There are certainly some big ones that we’re getting so far!
Given that we’re a TV site, we won’t be focusing too much on the movie side of things given that there are so many other places that you can go for some of that conversation.
Actor, Drama – Billy Bob Thornton, “Goliath.” This was a complete surprise to us, given that it felt as though Rami Malek probably had to down for the second straight year. Still, cheers to Billy on a great speech, and you can read more about that over here.
Actress, Comedy – Tracee Ellis Ross, “black-ish.” Thrilled for this win. This was a fairly open category, and this could get the topical and very-funny show further opportunities to stand out moving forward.
Comedy Series – “Atlanta.” A big win for a first-year show that had people talking — but was still relatively under-the-radar. That changes now.
Supporting Actor – Hugh Laurie, “The Night Manager.” Probably the surprise of the night over Sterling K. Brown. Even still, this was one of the funnier speeches of the night and it was fun to have Laurie up there.
Actress, Limited Series / TV Movie – Sarah Paulson, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” On the flip side, this one couldn’t have been more predictable.
Limited Series / TV Movie – “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” Very predictable, but also very much deserved.
Actor, Limited Series / TV Movie – Tom Hiddleston, “The Night Manager.” Clearly, the Globes really love this movie. Consider this a reminder that the HFPA really loves international flair.
Actress, Drama – Claire Foy, “The Crown.” Given the run of “The Night Manager” tonight, it was certainly not a surprise see another series with a British sensibility getting an award.
Drama Series – “The Crown.” While the Netflix series is very good, seeing it win this award over both “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld” to us may very well be the shock of the night.
Actor, Comedy – Donald Glover, “Atlanta.” This was the final award of the night for the TV field, and as someone who’s followed almost his entire career, it really is so easy to now be happy for him for all the progress that he’s made and how he now has such a platform for his voice.
