Golden Globes 2017: Jimmy Fallon spoofs ‘La La Land’ with Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake in cold open

Globes -

The vast majority of viewers for the Golden Globes are likely tuning in to see some winners; however, at the same exact time there are probably a select few people out there who are watching mostly for the chance to see what the opening is for the show. Granted, this isn’t the Ricky Gervais era of the award show. Jimmy Fallon is a very different sort of host; he’s not going to be coming out there firing off zingers, and he’s also not going to be touching on anything too controversial, beyond maybe a few Donald Trump jokes here and there.

Here’s the funny thing about that, though: At this point, isn’t it almost more controversial when someone doesn’t make a Trump joke? We love them when they’re original, but so often they’ve not become routine.

Maybe we’ll have more commentary on the opening monologue soon, but for the time being, we want to focus on the cold open! This replaced part of Ricky Gervais’ opening, and it was a nice little spoof on “La La Land” featuring an elaborate musical number and cameos from just about every big-name actor and actress you can think of. Many of them, including Evan Rachel Wood of “Westworld” and Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot,” appeared in character. Others, such as Kit Harington, made in-jokes based on what happened on their show. The appearances from Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake near the end of the opening brought it over the top.

While we’d say that an opening musical number was somewhat predictable for Fallon, there was a lot of magic and entertainment to go along with it. Given that 2016 was such a depressing year, we don’t mind so much that the tone was slightly lighter and less mean to kick off the year. Can we pretend now that this is an omen of other happy things to come? Fingers crossed…
