‘Doctor Who’ 2016 Christmas Special video: Go behind the scenes with Peter Capaldi, Justin Chatwin
Finally, some of the long-awaited rumors for the upcoming “Doctor Who” Christmas Special have been confirmed! The show is celebrating the holidays later this year for its first episode in a solid year, and to go along with that, we’re also getting a show with a little bit more of a superhero twist than usual.
The video below was revealed earlier today while at New York Comic-Con, and it confirms the talk that Justin Chatwin of “Shameless” fame is going to be playing a superhero of some sorts — and that this hero is apparently named Grant. Sounds fairly simple for a superhero, no? We also now know that this special is entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” which we personally find fun just because as any superhero fan will know, Mysterio is actually the name of an iconic Spider-Man villain.
This special will feature Peter Capaldi working alongside Matt Lucas as Nardole, but it doesn’t seem like he is going to be a traditional Companion by any means. This will also likely be the last episode of the series before the debut of Pearl Mackie as Bill, the Companion who is formally taking over for Jenna Coleman during the upcoming tenth season in the new year.
As a whole, we imagine that there will be some comedy here, some drama, and also a few heartfelt moments here and there. After all, just remember that this is the second-to-last Special for showrunner Steven Moffat. He is departing the series following the 2017 special, which presumably will come after all of season 10 has aired.
