‘My Roanoke Nightmare’ title seen within ‘American Horror Story’ season 6 premiere

AHS -

Is Roanoke the answer to many questions that are out there for fans of “American Horror Story“? We’re writing this article around 20 minutes into Wednesday night’s premiere episode, and in there we saw a title card reading “My Roanoke Nightmare.”

What does this tell us? It’s a little odd first and foremost that there is no theme song, but we do know that this location, which has its origins as a settler colony with all of the residents disappeared, was a long-running theme for this season. The larger question is precisely what’s going to be coming up after this. Are we looking at a season where every week is a different story set around this world, and with a different cast? Given that this episode primarily consists of just Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson (at least as of 10:20 p.m. Eastern time), that’s a pretty good theory. The whole interview format also is an interesting conceit in its own way, since it adds for a different perspective, a sort of augmented reality that is reminiscent of both Discovery ghost shows and “Mr. Robot” at the same time.

In a way, the “Roanoke Nightmare” theme-of-sorts is certainly frustrating in that we want to have something tangible in order to pin the series to; over the course of time, that is what we as viewers want with almost every show. Yet, at the same exact time we do figure that there is something fun in the questions, and leaving us free from understanding the future is probably better than something like “Hotel,” which was big and gaudy and didn’t really say much of anything.
