‘Girl Meets World’ season 3, episode 5 review: Did Lucas choose between Riley, Lucas?

Girl Meets High School -“Girl Meets Triangle” was fittingly the title for Friday night’s episode of “Girl Meets World,” about fifteen minutes into it, it was pretty clear what the majority of the story was going to revolve around: Whether or not Lucas would choose between Riley and Maya. It is something that we’ve waited to see ever since “Girl Meets Texas,” and in some ways his attitude towards it has made him somewhat unlikable.

Do we understand why the character would waffle? Absolutely, mostly because he is so young. It’s understandable that he would now precisely what to do in this situation, given that he has never been in the position before. He wanted to believe that they could bury their heads in the sand forever. It’s too bad that we still don’t have a decision; Lucas claimed he made it, but then the episode gave us a “to be continued.” Let’s say it together: ARRGH!

While Lucas was struggling with his choice, Maya was struggling with herself. She had spent so much time with Riley that eventually she started to become Riley, and in the process lost much of who she was. It was actually pretty painful to watch this, mostly because Riley was basically told her best friend that she’s not Maya anymore. It wasn’t funny at all, but this show isn’t really always a comedy. It confronted some pretty tricky stuff here.

In the end, Maya started to have a wake-up call after realizing that her was basically a purple cat; basically, Riley art. The two friends left to be rebellious, and maybe this is the beginnings of something new (or old, in Maya’s sake). Time will tell. This was an important episode, even if it’s one without a clear ending. Grade: B+.
