‘The Night Shift” season 3, episode 1 review: Can TC and Jordan get past the awkwardness?

It has been a while since we’ve had new episodes of “The Night Shift”, but the gang is back tonight with the season 3 premiere. TC and Jordan had a rough end to season 2, but we are hoping that they can find a way to process the loss of their baby and help each other move forward.

Jordan may have rejected TC’s marriage proposal during the season 2 finale, but these two still have to find a way to work together. They haven’t spoken in about two months and in tonight’s premiere, they are forced to work together again even though Topher was trying to keep these two on separate working schedules. TC talks to Jordan to try to make things less awkward between them by asking if she might consider moving to the day shift, but instead it turns into a fight where neither of them are giving up the night shift. She tells him that she’s resentful that he went to Afghanistan while she was pregnant, and after talking about it with his ex-sister in law, he sees it from Jordan’s perspective that maybe he shouldn’t have left her while she was pregnant.

Topher is tired of being a “house cat” and has a chance to be on the field again tonight and with TC and Jordan not wanting to be working together, he’s hoping to have even more opportunities to be on the field, but while out in the field Topher’s should starts giving him pain and he faces the very real possibility that his days working out of the hospital might be over.

The new intern, Shannon, is taking no prisoners as she uses a practical joke that Paul played on her to teach everyone that she has no sense of humor for people messing with her, by punching him in the face. He tries to apologize later, but Shannon makes it clear that she doesn’t think that it’s okay to try to humiliate her in front of everyone on her first day. Shannon is really rattling Paul and after a pep talk from Scott, he’s got his confidence back. He tries to be the bigger person by offering Shannon his help any times she needs and she accuses him of hitting on her in front of everyone. After Paul gets flustered, she tells him she’s pranking him back – looks like they are even.

Oh and Drew may or may not have been shot on base while in a surgery room…. big “to be continued” cliffhanger!!!!!

We expected things to be pretty awkward for TC and Jordan and they were. We aren’t sure how they are going to get past this situation, but we are mostly hoping to see TC grow and change a bit from this situation to realize that he can’t always go running into danger when there are people at home depending on him. Sometimes is okay, but not every time. So far, it’s a great start to the season. Episode grade: B+
