‘The Walking Dead’ season 6, episode 12 reaction: Melissa McBride on Carol – Tobin surprise
While it may have only been a tiny moment on Sunday night’s new episode of “The Walking Dead,” we have a feeling that there are going to be many out there who are talking about the Carol – Tobin kiss for some time. We know that many people have been hoping for something between her and Daryl, but the character went in a different direction in an episode that ended in a not-so-great way for her with her getting captured by the Saviors.
So why have that little moment with Tobin following her latest baking session? It’s something that seems to be a function of her trying to reconcile the multiple parts of herself. this is how Melissa McBride explains it in a postmortem to Entertainment Weekly:
“Tobin’s very sweet. He’s a sweet fellow and I think was there for Carol, who is trying to understand how any of us can be capable of doing what we’re doing, more specifically, taking human lives. For her, when I look at Carol, I think about how the closest person we have to our own self is our self. She’s the closest person she has, and also she is someone who is estranged from herself in a weird way. And I think it’s just trying to find that understanding of how we got to where we are doing the things that we do, the horrible things that we had to do, and juxtaposed with that opportunity within those few weeks of peacetime where she’s just running around handing out cookies.”
Who knows if this will ultimately lead into anything more for the character? All that we can say right now is that the moment is coming at a time when these characters are trying to do what they can in order to take stock in some more human relationships. This is why we saw Rick and Michonne finally sleep together after so much buildup, and while we see Abraham make decisions on what he wants as opposed to what is convenient for him.
