‘Code Black’ season 2: Talking renewal odds for CBS drama

Code Black -

Tonight, CBS is saying farewell to one of its freshman series in “Code Black” … but is it going to have an opportunity to stick around for a sophomore year? That is certainly a subject that is worthy of a little bit of discussion here.

Overall, the show has averaged so far a 1.3 rating in the key 18-49 demographic throughout its first season in live+same day viewing, the main thing that is looked at in determining a renewal. That’s not a great rating by any means, but it was at least enough to routinely put the show ahead of “Nashville” / “American Crime” as #2 in the timeslot on broadcast cable. (“Chicago PD” is sitting pretty at #1.) It’s the sort of rating that could lead CBS to cancel it, and they can easily point to these numbers as the primary reason why.

However, at the same exact time there’s a good case to bring the show back. For example, it’s performing just as well as “Madam Secretary,” it’s been rivaling “Limitless,” it’s and it’s easily taken down “Elementary,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “The Amazing Race.” With it being a hospital drama, there’s less to worry about in terms of viewers drifting, since they can always come back to this show later and be able to dive right back in. Also, we know for sure that “The Good Wife” is ending, and “CSI: Cyber” is sure to be canceled.

In the end, we’re going to say that “Code Black” is likely to be renewed … but we also want to hear from you in the comments!
