‘Call the Midwife’ season 5 spoilers: Miranda Hart will not appear as Chummy

Call the Midwife -

Despite the writing being on the wall in some ways when it comes to the following story, it does not make it any less of a bummer: You’re not going to be seeing any of Miranda Hart on the upcoming fifth season of “Call the Midwife.” It’s not so much that the show doesn’t have any use for her character of Chummy; instead, the issue here is more just that Hart herself is extremely busy doing movies and other comedy work, so it is not easy to make it work schedule-wise. Her role in season 4 was relatively small, and this is a natural progression.

So does this mean that Hart is gone from the series forever? Not necessarily, as she herself says in a new interview with the Mirror:

“On the plus side, maybe Chummy can come back in the next series an enlightened, crazed 60s hippy, having an affair with Paul McCartney. Watch this space.”

If we had to guess, we’d say that a likely appearance for a resurgence of Chummy would be a potential finale at some point down the road, or even the last episode of the entire series. She seems to have a good rapport and relationship with the show still, and given that she was not killed off it feels like it will be worthwhile to see her turn up at some point in the future. A good comparison could be Lily James returning for the final episode of “Downton Abbey” airing on Christmas Day.

The fifth season of “Call the Midwife” is going to be premiering on BBC early next year, though there will be another Christmas episode airing before that.
