‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 spoilers: Will a certain incident befall Chandler Riggs’ Carl?

Carl -

Let’s start this particular “Walking Dead” article with a pseudo-spoiler-alert: There are events from the comic series that are going to be discussed moving forward. If you’re fine with that, read on.

Still there? If so, we have to assume that you are ready to deal with some of the questions surrounding Carl Grimes. We always want Chandler Riggs to have a good storyline; specifically, we thought he killed it during the fourth season, and we wanted more from him last year. While it would be gory and terrible for his character to lose his eye, it’d be a pretty awesome thing for Riggs to play.

With that, there are a variety of logistical challenges that go along with this. You have to write the rest of Carl’s stories with this in mind, and given that we’re not sure eye-patches are readily available in the zombie apocalypse, it may not be as easy as just stamping one of those things on it. If he had to get a heavy makeup job every time, that slows down the production.

You’re not going to get a definite answer one way or another from showrunner Scott Gimple on the subject. After all, why would he do that? The only thing that he would offer up when it comes to a tease on this story was the following comment to Entertainment Weekly:

“We don’t know if there’s anyone losing their eye … There are some things we can’t do that were in the comic. Rick losing his hand — there’s also another big TV show that did it recently.”

Gimple could be referring to either “Game of Thrones” or “Agents of SHIELD” with that comment; it really doesn’t matter. What does is that the show continues to be adamant that they will not be directly influenced to do something just because it happens in the comics. Therefore, we still think that there is no guarantee that a particular fate will fall a character because of Negan turning up (which he may do at the end of this season / early in season 7).
