MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5, episode 3 review: What popularity means for Jenna Hamilton
The entire series of “Awkward” is one that has revolved around the notion of popular, and how everyone wants to be in the in-circle. However, at the same time what Monday night’s episode showed us is that for the most part, it is not everything that it is cracked up to be.
The most entertaining part of the entire episode was seeing something that feels in some ways shockingly realistic, as Jenna Hamilton learned after rising to be one of the “cool kids” that all they really do is either talk football, or sit around posting photos of just how much fun they’re having on social media. They are all fluff, but no substance. We tend to view the show with a satiric lens most of the time, but this felt to us fairly straightforward.
Meanwhile, Matty’s adventure into the world of the not-so-popular was a little more all over the place and goofy, with the assumption being that for the most part, unpopular kids spend most of their time being moody and listening to weird stuff. We’re just not that into the Matty story right now.
At the same time, the Lissa story with her mom was pretty funny. Really, anything with Lissa tends to be. We are not entirely sure for the most part how her story really fits in to everything at this point, mostly because we have already seen her gone off the rails, only to come back to some of her values. We’re just glad that she and Sadie are here sometimes to remind us that this is, in fact, a comedy.
