‘Dancing with the Stars 21’ debate: Could Alek Skarlatos, Bindi Irwin, Gary Busey be season’s big surprise?
Everyone knows going into “Dancing with the Stars” each season that there are favorites, and we imagine this will be the case this time around with people like Nick Carter or Tamar Braxton, who both have a history of performing and at least moving about the stage.
However, what about the underdogs? That’s what this story is about: Trying to find the Tommy Chong or the Sadie Robertson, who will impress at times with their dancing and go much further than anyone projected going into the season. We’re going to spotlight each contestant individually soon enough, but for the sake of this article, we felt like we would give you at least some solid candidates.
Alek Skarlatos – Alek is going to be an interesting one. He’s young and in great shape, but at the same time this is a guy known for being a hero in a spontaneous moment. He couldn’t be further from a ballroom dancer, but if he turns out to have a talent for it and he builds a following he will be a strong contender for the title.
Bindi Irwin – Like Sadie, she’s fully capable of being a great dancer despite not having any real experience in the field. One thing that she has going for her is that she has grown up at least in part in an entertainment environment, though there are many key differences in what she and her family do and trying to dance in heels in front of millions.
Chaka Khan – She’s used to being on stage and understands rhythm. She’s not going to have the same flexibility as the younger stars, but maybe she and Keo Motsepe catch lightning in a bottle. Everyone wants to see Keo go far in a season.
Gary Busey – It’s not particularly likely that Gary, the oldest contestant this season and a guy with an injury history, is going to be a great dancer. However, he an Anna Trebunskaya could be super-entertaining, and that could cause him to go far.
Paula Deen – Here’s the thing with Paula: She’s also probably not going to be a great dancer, but she does have a lot of devoted fans, even if there are also plenty of people who will probably never vote for her. If her following feels galvanized and has an “us against the world” mentality, she could survive longer than many imagine she would.
