‘Mistresses’ season 4: Renewal hopes and much more for ABC drama

Mistresses -Tonight, the season 3 finale of “Mistresses” is airing on ABC, which is great for those of you eager to figure out if Calista really killed Luca, if Vivian is going to survive, and if there is finally going to be a big move in the April and Marc’s relationship.

There is also a chance that tonight will be the series finale to go along with the end of the season. The show’s ratings have not been good for some time; while as of late they’ve been comparable to the end of season 2, over the course of the season they are down by double-digits in the 18-49 demographic from season 2, when Alyssa Milano was a part of the show and also when it aired on Monday night’s after the one-two punch of “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise.”

Is there still a hope for the show to return even with this in mind? We’re not ruling it out, with the primary reason being that viewers really love the show! Yes, it’s cheesy and super-soapy sometimes, but that is part of the fun. There are few shows like it in primetime, and we almost wish at times that it had a different name, since we feel like that scares some people off in the way that “Cougar Town” may have when it was on ABC.

The network has not made a decision yet on the show’s future, and it could be down to the wire. What it has going for it is that it does pull good viewers via non-traditional means (like DVR ratings), it has some solid social traffic, and that with the set moving to Vancouver, it is a little more cost-effective.

As for what’s working against it, it’s as simple as the live numbers not being what they should be. A “Bachelor in Paradise” aftershow, which probably costs almost next to nothing by TV standards, has generated better ratings at times.
