‘The Bastard Executioner’ spoilers: Ed Sheeran scores recurring role

TBXEd Sheeran has clearly forged a good relationship with FX and Kurt Sutter. Previously, he contributed his version of the song “Make It Rain” to the “Sons of Anarchy” soundtrack, and today it is being reported that he is joining the cast of “The Bastard Executioner” in a pretty significant role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sheeran is going to play the part of Sir Cormac on the show. He is a protegee of a “high-ranking church elder,” and is described as being both extremely ambitious and also deadly. Production on the series is taking place in Wales, and the series is going to premiere on the network a little bit later this fall.

While Sheeran has acted here and there (he made a cameo on the “Undateable” live episode), this is his first major role of this variety. With that said, Sutter is someone who has shown willing to take chances on surprising guest stars for his show. Some surprising additions to “Sons of Anarchy” over the years include Joel McHale, Lea Michele, and Dave Navarro. Sure, two of those three people are actors, but neither Joel nor Lea were known for gritty drama on television. Sutter finds a way to fit these people into his world in excellent fashion.

There is still no premiere date for the series, but at least the network has started to become a little more active in their promotion of it over the past little while. We’ve seen a few promos, and the show is clearly going for a dark, formidable aesthetic that seems fitting for some of Sutter’s other work.
