ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5 spoilers: Is there still hope for Fitz and Mellie?

The Lawn Chair -Scandal” loves their cliffhangers, and you really should not be shocked at all that there were many of them that happened at the end of season 4 Thursday night. We had “Eli” arrested after a lengthy battle with Olivia, Quinn and Huck at odds, and for Olivia Pope, a chance to make “Vermont” and those ideals into more of a reality.

So is there really hope still for Fitz and Mellie after he threw her out? It doesn’t seem that way on the surface, given that he effectively cleaned house after what she did, firing Cyrus at the same time and bringing in Elizabeth North to be his new Chief of Staff. Bellamy Young did speak up in a finale post-mortem to The Hollywood Reporter, and she made it clear that to a certain extent, her character probably will not give up completely on her marriage to the President:

“I have to think [that there is still a chance]; I mean, I have to remain optimistic. I know Mellie loves him, to her own detriment. It will be interesting to see how Fitz feels with having everything he’s wanted right at his fingertips now. Seeing how his dreams really fit with him, because sometimes when we want something so much, the reality of it is not what the dream of it is. I think that’s probably what Mellie has to hope for in her heart of hearts: that it won’t be what he hoped with Olivia, when she’s not a taboo sort of “catch me now or never” sort of fantasy. In Mellie’s mind, she did everything for him and her hope is that he’ll remember that and will be loyal.”

If things go south still for Mellie and Fitz, there are other problems that will surface, including how this will end up impacting the position that Mellie now holds in the Senate. Fitz may be a little more indifferent, given that he never has to run for public office again. What’s stopping him now from being with Olivia if he chooses to? Mellie’s already got what she wanted politically, and these dynamics are what leaves us in such an uncertain place going into the hiatus.
