‘Finding Carter’ season 2, episode 7 review: The Gabe – Abby departure

Finding Carter -Given that we had a busy Tuesday night with a variety of finales, we are a little later on the “Finding Carter” review cycle than we generally are. Don’t worry: Regularly-scheduled reviews will be back up next week!

What was interesting about Tuesday night’s episode was that even though it is Carter’s name that is in the title, the majority of the episode was not even about her. Instead, the bulk of it was spent on forgotten character Gabe, who somehow manages to turn casually hitting on new guidance counselor Abby into a real thing, hooking up with her inside of the office at school. Sure, this makes for tremendous MTV drama, since teachers / counselors pairing off with students seems to be a big thing on these shows (see “Pretty Little Liars”). With that said, how crazy is this one? It’s not a good look for Abby that she not only hooked up with Gabe, but did so in her very office without even locking the door. Of course someone, Bird or otherwise, was going to learn about it.

Thanks to her fiance learning something about her indiscretions and reporting it, it feels like this relationship could be over already … at least for Gabe. He’s an immature teenager who probably thought that being with his counselor would be cool. He didn’t think about what she was potentially doing to her career and her life in the process. We have a feeling that this is far from over now.

Meanwhile, Carter was a counselor in her own way to Taylor this week, given that she helped her to get off some of the pills and prepare for an actual future rather than just continuing to dwell in pain and sorrow over learning that Lori was her biological mother. Nothing really came out of this other than Taylor getting better, and we suppose that for now, that is really enough since the Lori confrontations will continue in some way throughout the season.

As a whole, this episode was somewhat flawed given that they made the Abby character out to be so unrealistically reckless when it comes to her job. Still, we get that there are the conversation-starters and the entertainment value there at the same time. It was just so completely out there given that Gabe’s flirtation felt so casual last week. Grade: C+.
