‘Elementary’ season 3 finale reaction: Is Sherlock’s father on the way?

Elementary -Tonight, “Elementary” season 3 ended with an event that is almost sure to go down as one of the biggest that we’ve seen on the series so far, even if it is far from a happy reveal: Realizing that Sherlock Holmes is succumbing to his demons, and relapsing after spending so much time working to be better. This comes after a case involving Alfredo took him down an extremely dark path; while it turns out that his onetime sponsor is okay, that still does not bode well for the future.

One important that we did learn through this finale, though, is that the time is finally here when we get to meet Sherlock’s long-mysterious father. While they seemingly have not been cast yet, executive producer Rob Doherty teases the following in a post-mortem piece on TVLine:

“I think it’s time. I would very much like to meet Dad and explore this very complicated dynamic that we’ve been alluding to over the last two seasons. There’s a lot to get out of a longer-term story about Sherlock and his father and everything between them.”

As Doherty notes, the exciting thing about this story to us is that is not going to be a character who shows up, only to leave an episode or so later. Maybe this will by like the Mycroft story in season 2, or Kitty in season 3, where he is going to be around for some time. Granted, we’ll have to wait and see until the show returns in the fall.
