‘American Idol XIV’ review: Nick Fradiani, Jax, Tyanna Jones, Joey Cook perform eighties hits

American Idol -Tonight, “American Idol XIV” is going back in time to when there was big hair, big personalities, and the radio still ruled supreme: The 1980s. Unfortunately, this also meant having to hear a ton of the same songs that we’ve heard on this show time and time again, which is not always fun. What was fun, and bizarre? Watching Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez dance during a performance of “Push It,” which is up there with David Hasselhoff as the most awkward moment of the night.

As per always, we’re going to have some more updates when it comes to the show over the course of the night. Stay tuned for more updates!

Daniel Seavey, “You Make My Dreams Come True” – This was not good. For those who hate that Daniel continues to advance, the show is trying in a way to get rid of him. They keep putting him at the top of the show!

Quentin Alexander, “In the Air Tonight” – Awesome performance. This and Daniel’s performance are ultimately night and day. There’s so much to love here ultimately that every second mesmerized us.

Joey Cook, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” – We’ve loved Joey for weeks now, but there was something that was just off about this performance. It was paced a little weird, and it almost felt like she did not even know what she wanted the performance to be.

Tyanna Jones, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” – I decent performance from Tyanna, who we still have a ton of faith in to go very far. It just feels like she is in a little bit of a rough patch here vocally.

Jax, “You Give Love a Bad Name” – We loved her performance last week, but not everyone else out there did. Ultimately, though, this was even better in some ways! She made this song seem modern, which is something that the majority of the singers tonight did not do.

Nick Fradiani, “Man in the Mirror” – Nick’s problem seems to be more and more present with every performance: He has a great voice, but where’s the emotion behind it? There is some sort of vulnerability holding him back, and he almost needs a sort of Casey James-like moment to usher in that side of himself.

Clark Beckham, “Every Breath You Take” – Beautiful. Clark made this song current, and that is something he’s struggled with at times. He and Nick have at times been on the same playing field this season, but this put him above in our book.

Qaasim Middleton, “Addicted to Love” – He’s back! Also, it feels like the save really motivated him to be as great as humanly possible. This was his best vocal of the season, and we don’t really think there is much competition.

Rayvon Owen, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” – A nice performance by Rayvon, but what about it was new or special? Unfortunately not much, which we feel like is part of the problem. We don’t doubt that he can perform very well, but there is something still missing emotionally.
