NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Deanna Johnson, Joe Tolo, Mia Z, Brooke Adee audition

The latest -The Voice” returned tonight with another batch of new auditions, and we’ll say that overall, it did not reach the same vocal heights as the premiere. You had a few contestants who received undeserved praise, and it was really only the end of the show when we started to get really impressed.

What this episode did for us as a whole was start to give us some more insight into who is the best coach at the moment, and we do feel like Pharrell Williams is killing it. Adam Levine is still struggling to find his mojo, but as a whole, this may be our favorite panel that we’ve seen in terms of chemistry and competitiveness. Everyone really seems desperate to try to win this season! As always, take a look at some of the contestants who advanced to the next round below.

Anthony Riley – He’s a pretty solid singer, but worthy of that four-chair turn almost immediately? Not exactly. This performance was another reminder, though, that Pharrell does mean serious business when it comes to pitching contestants. He is so suave, and he won Anthony over.

Gabrielle Wolfchild – A unique name for a pretty unique. While not necessarily outstanding, there an exciting originality here. The majority of the coaches turned around, but he picked Christina as the one to guide him down the road this season.

Brooke Adee – One of the themes so far this season is Adam Levine being shut out after turning his chair around so many times … and it continued here. The sixteen-year old picked Blake Shelton because she liked his coaching. Poor Adam.

Tonya Boyd-Cannon – Adam finally has a team member! It’s pretty ironic here, given that she does not have really anything in common with him at all musically. With that being said, though, sometimes these combinations do work out.

Joe Tolo – Smooth, soulful voice. He needs to get more into the song, but he can HIT THOSE NOTES. Watching everyone gang up on Blake Shelton is always fun, especially since it was between him and Christina. She ended up winning.

Mia Z – She’s got natural talent, but kudos to Adam Levine for calling her out somewhat on the affectations in her voice. We never like it when contestants try to sing like someone else when they are good enough on their own. She appreciated Pharrell’s blues connections enough to pick him over Christina.

Blaze Johnson – Now that it’s not played a billion times, we really love “How to Save a Life.” We didn’t think Blaze’s voice was the best, but he did pipe in some of the emotion into the song that needed to be there. Adam added to his team here.

Deanna Johnson – Deanna had a tough road to getting back on the show, but she had a soaring vocal that helped to prove just how worthy she really was of getting back to the show. After so many blown pitches, this was finally Adam’s chance to get back into good graces.
