‘Glee’ alum, Broadway favorite Idina Menzel hoping to star in new comedy
After spending so many years becoming a Broadway legend, Idina Menzel is apparently ready for a change. The singer / actress, who has also appeared on “Glee” as Rachel Berry’s biological mother, is going to be looking for a home as a part in a new comedy series.
According to a new report from Deadline, Menzel is poised to star in “Happy Time,” a comedy executive-produced by Ellen DeGeneres that revolves around a woman who, after so many years in the spotlight, decides that she is ready for something a little different. For her, that includes no longer having to pretend that she is in some perpetual state of happiness. While there may not be a whole lot of news about this show out there at the moment, that does not diminish to us from being excited about it.
What will be very interesting about this show is seeing whether or not a Broadway icon can carry a series on television. While Michele and Matthew Morrison pulled it off during the early days on “Glee,” we feel like that show was a perfect storm of many things. For the most part, we’re fairly optimistic. In between “Wicked” and her part as Elsa in “Frozen,” she is well-known for a variety of other things.
If this show is picked up, we could see it on the schedule in the next couple of years. This is still in the very early stages, though, and it may not fully be developed in time for this TV season starting this fall. We’ll have more as it breaks.
