NBC’s ‘The Voice’ preview: DaNica Shirey and Toia Jones battle for Pharrell

Pharrell -We have said a ton of great things about Pharrell Williams as a coach on “The Voice.” He’s been incredibly intelligent with his feedback, and has proven himself to be more than entertaining. That was one of our biggest concerns going into this season.

With that being said, we’re starting to wonder if he is picking songs strictly from the “we’ve licensed these a bunch of times and they’re super-convenient” book. There’s nothing about hearing another version of Beyonce’s “Halo” that is particularly interesting to us, and it doesn’t matter if it is DaNica Shirey, Toia Jones, or Beyonce herself singing it at this point. The song has been overdone.

We do at least want to try to offer up some sort of opinion on this battle beyond just a few complaints, so we’ll say this: There is quite a bit of good stuff brought to the table by these two ladies: They hit all of the notes, have confidence on stage, and understand how their voices work. We’d probably pick Toia between the two just because we like her phrasing a little bit better, but this is close. These two are similar (we understand why they were put together), and while we know it’s a cop-out, we’re not entirely sure who Pharrell is going to pick in the end.

Luckily, we do only have to wait until the episode airs on Monday night to find out. We’ll have so much more from the show before then, as well!
