‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: The struggles for Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey to play
Are we going to see a Meredith – Derek divorce on “Grey’s Anatomy” season 11? While tragedy and hard times are something that does seem to often befall characters on this show, that does not necessarily mean that the people involved are going to end up being completely devastated.
So when it comes to the messy state of things for Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey’s characters, the struggle for Shonda Rhimes is going to be trying to find a way to show these two characters struggling to make things work, but stay committed to the marriage at the same time. Arguments and life-altering decisions do now have to necessarily equal the two deciding not to walk down the aisle.
For more on this subject, see what Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly below:
“I don’t think that it’s a marriage-ending argument … It feels very TV for people’s marriages to end over easy things or hard things. I actually would like to watch a couple have a hard time in their marriage, and have it not be that that means their marriage is over. There’s something really great about watching a couple have a mature marriage where stuff goes wrong, things are hard, and people try to push through it and figure it out.”
This is a show that has done a good job of showing similar conflicts in the past, and they will continue to do so. The reason that this works is that you know that Rhimes has no problem ending relationships (see Cristina and Owen), so there is always that fear of it being there; however, at the same time you know that there is hope that it can somehow last. You really need that balance most of the time.
