‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11: Don’t count on Katherine Heigl appearance

The future -Just in case you were wondering about whether or not Isaiah Washington returning to “Grey’s Anatomy” changes anything when it comes to whether or not Katherine Heigl will ever return, it turns out here that the answer is “probably not.” A year ago, it was made fairly clear that there were no plans from the Shonda Rhimes camp to bring Izzie back into the fold, and that seems to be just as true today.

Rhimes responded to a tweet last week regarding a possible Izzie return by saying that she’s “probably not coming back.” There may be a small group of people out there bummed out about this, but why would the show really need her back? We feel the difference between Washington’s Burke and Izzie is pretty substantial. When it comes to Burke, she was a significant part of Cristina’s life, and given the place that she was in, there was a fitting reason to have him come back so that she could move forward with her own career.

Why bring Izzie back? Most of the characters tied to her, like Alex, have already moved forward and there is nothing that can be gained from seeing her again. Also, we don’t quite imagine that everything is water under the bridge given that this show still has writers (go figure), and everyone knows what happened with some of Heigl’s comments there.

The last thing to bring up here is simply a matter of logistics, mostly because while Katherine has said in the past that she would be open to returning, she has a new show now in “State of Affairs” over on NBC. That should keep her plenty busy, and the fact that it airs on another network than “Grey’s Anatomy” would make coming over difficult.

Still, we know that there will be a contingent of people who want one more Izzie appearance before things end. We’ll be happy personally if the show focuses more on things that matter in the present, and providing fan service that serves more of a purpose.
