‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 10: Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez, more sign on for seasons 11, 12
There just so happens to be even more big “Grey’s Anatomy” news breaking tonight following the reveal of how Cristina Yang is going to leave Seattle: Four longtime actors on the show have confirmed that they will be back for season 11 alongside Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey.
Sources confirm that Chandra Wilson (Bailey), Sara Ramirez (Callie), Justin Chambers (Alex), and James Pickens Jr. (Webber) have all signed up for two more years of the show. While there is no renewal yet, a season 11 is almost surely going to happen … and given the length of the new contracts, we could see a season 12 coming with the labels “final season” attached to it. (That’s just speculation on our part, though; don’t read anything more into it.)
As for the status of many other actors on the show, there is not a substantial reason to worry for now beyond what you already know. Wilson, Chambers, and Pickens are the only three original cast members beyond Pompeo and Dempsey still with the show, and Ramirez has been around since season 2. Many other actors who joined the show later have contracts that operate a little differently. Pending some substantial breakdown of talks for someone down the road or a surprise in the finale, the only actors leaving the show for sure are Sandra Oh, Gaius Charles, and Tessa Ferrer.
The only somewhat-spoilery announcement among the group is Chambers, mostly because Alex has had an opportunity to move on to a different practice this season. This doesn’t mean that he is locked in to working at the hospital moving forward, but that we are at least going to see more of his story.
As for the status of Caterina Scorsone, that is something that remains to be seen. The series is certainly setting her up to be a regular next season thanks to Amelia having a job offer in Seattle, and her promotion would help to fill the void left by Cristina moving on. As we said recently, though, there is no real replacement for Dr. Yang, and the show is better off bringing in a known face like Derek’s sister rather than just casting someone new.
