‘Bones’ season 9, episode 21 review: Cam and Arastoo look to the future

What's ahead -On Monday night’s “Bones” season 9 episode, about 90% of it was something that was occasionally funny, but also by and large forgettable. “Bones” needs some more truly standout cases, and while exploring frozen body parts was a step up, we still feel like there is another step that the show can take.

The more interesting part of this episode for us was the story about Cam and Arastoo, since these are two characters who don’t often get the sort of time in the spotlight that they did tonight. There are basically two different ways to look at the story, which was mostly all about Cam trying to get acceptance, and Arastoo also trying to understand his own parents better.

The good – The performances across the board here were as strong as they could be, given the screen time. There was also a nice little balance of traditions past and present.

The bad – The trajectory here was so boring and predictable that the writers could have done it half-asleep. there is a conflict, and then at the end of the episode the conflict ends. We would have much preferred this to either be a multiple-episode arc, or for there to be a more interesting resolution rather than just the parents showing up and smoothing things over after an awkward first meeting.

Our biggest problem with the post-Pelant era of “Bones” remains that there isn’t anything that the show is really building too right now, and that makes the formulaic cases feel even more so. If there was one more Ghost Killer episode in here, maybe we’d feel a little different. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that. Grade: C.
