‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 18 video: Ian Somerhalder and a reunion

After some weeks off in a hiatus, “The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW on Thursday night with “Resident Evil.” If you have been following the site much as of late, then you know already that this is a pretty important episode for Paul Wesley. He directed the story for the first time, and he’s got a lot of material to tackle.

For example, how about a “Delena” reunion? After she made the decision to go back to Whitmore College and get away from her on-again, off-again boyfriend, she runs into him again in this episode while with Caroline and Enzo. How quickly can you say “awkward”? This scene definitely is that and then some, but it’s also pretty entertaining to watch unfold given that you know that these two characters have a hard time letting each other go.

Still, we want them to just commit to something rather than just doing the same dance for a long period of time. We’d also love to have more information at some point about whether or not Paul is actually appearing much in this episode. Despite having such a paramount role as the director, there hasn’t been very much spoiled in the way of him turning up in it. Maybe his story is a secret, or maybe he wanted deliberately to not have that much time having to film itself. (We could see that getting a little messy for a first-time director on the show.)
