‘Psych’ season 8, episode 3 review: Does a remake of a classic episode work?
While we have been skimping on the “Psych” reviews somewhat as of late (blame the massive logjam of programs airing Wednesday nights), there is something worth exploring with what the show did this past episode. We’ve known for a while that they were going to recreate an episode from the first season, and try to make it much better than it was the first time around/
Given that we personally didn’t really start loving the show until the start of season 2, it was easy to tell that there was a much better version of the original case this week regarding a surprising murder in the business of the local news. There were a few new details and faces added, but there was also an appreciation for what was done the first time. (Plus, Ralph Macchio!)
The only real issue that we had with this episode based on the premise alone was just that unless you’re a diehard psych-o (as the fans call themselves), you may not even remember the first episode. We’ve watched every episode of this show over the years, but re-watched very few. Thanks to that, we really don’t have any recollection at all of the first one. Perhaps if we did, we’d enjoy this one even more. But there were some great meta references and jokes placed throughout here, and it was made almost canon to what was going on today even if it was set in 2006.
Was this in the end a pretty disposable hour on TV? Sure, but we don’t really watch “Psych” to be spellbound or for the genre to be redefined. We watch it because we find it fun, and this episode was that and then some. We don’t know if we’d do this whole “remake” thing again, but it was fun as a one-time thing. Grade: B.
