I’m not a purist. I only just binged through the first 2 seasons this September (on the couch recovering). My first reaction? Seasons 1 & 2 were fantastic & definitely worthy of more Emmy nominations than they got. I’ve had a hard time with season 3, though. And I’ve come to the conclusion that the Murtagh-less landscape is the reason. I’m just not that into the romance, despite the great acting and costumes and production design. Murtagh gave the show grit and touch of realism, which is a testament to the work of the actor behind him. His characterization actually reminds me of older men in my life–part honorable & loyal so that you feel some subconscious attachment to them, part intractable & crotchety so that they make you laugh your a** off, and part surprisingly violent so that you’re never quite sure what they’ll do next. If the producers don’t keep Murtagh in season 4, then they need to write a whole other show for him. (I actually think that keeping him alive was a smart business decision. They’re reaching for a larger audience than just the book fans, and with so many people on the internet saying Murtagh is their favorite character….)

I believe like jdlar53 that he’ll take the place of “Duncan Innes”.

But Duncan is already in the colonies, he was sent with the prisoners from Ardsmuir.

I have feared that Murtagh would be the character hanged in the beginning of book four. Hayes I think his name was. It would bring Claire and Jamie together to grieve a shared friend from their past. But we would be as torn up to see a dear friend die so senselessly. I feel that the foundation for the loss of his arm was hinted at with the rat bites on Murtaugh arm as well.

Well I’m a book purist,but I so loved Duncan L., interpretation of Murtagh,he has done a great job.well Murtagh was at Ardsmuir already & it looked they shipped him of with the other Scot’s as an indenture person,so he is alive!What the powers of adaptation will give him,we’ll see in season 4.It’ll make J&C lives easier as He is the only one who knows about the time travel!
