In reply to William_313. Perhaps you missed the Christmas Special? He gains a new set of regenerations. And regenerations live for far longer than a century. The 7th was over 900 years old.

War John Hurt
John Hurt played an Incarnation set between the 8th and 9th Doctor. Because he is not known as “The Doctor” he is not counted as a Doctor, though clearly he used up a regeneration, he is not “Doctor”.

9 Christopher Eccleston

10 David Tennant
10 later regenerated again, using up the regeneration, but because he didn’t change his body or personality, he is the same Doctor. So he remains numbered “10”. Yet again, he used up a regeneration, so total regens = 11(12 Bodies)

11 Matt Smith

This makes matt the 11th Doctor, but is the last of that cycle of regenerations. Therefore, he is still the 11th Doctor. But the 13 Body.

12 Peter Capaldi

There.
That is perfectly explained.
12 Doctors. 14 Bodies. Two of which either never known as the Doctor, or else, also known as the “10th” Doctor.

you’re all stupid. John Hurt is 8, Ecclestone 9, Tennant 10 + 1 regeneration making Smith 12 and Capaldi 13, it’s nothing to do with centuries,

But think about it, remember 10#2. Tennant used up a regeneration in Journey’s End, it even says so in the Christmas special. So Matt Smith is already 13.
Which means, that there are going to be total 25 Doctors, including the War Doctor and 10#2. So only the 23rd Doctor.

The War Doctor bumped the others up a rung. Think of all the fun they could have with the 13th (unlucky?) Doctor. Maybe not unlucky for him but others.
